Many years ago, in 1995, Sweden was voted the most equally opportuned country in the world. Sure enough, Sweden is far advanced in stipulating its equality laws, for example, the law against gross violation against women, the law against same salary discriminating and the law against trading in sex. Officially these laws should mean that both women and men enjoy equal rights, possibilities and responsibilities but in reality this is not the case. Berit ÅS, a Norwegian women’s researcher and politician has observed, explained, identified and defined the five most common techniques used by men to subordinate women on a day to day basis. We call them methods of domination and they can be used one by one or in combination with each other. These are: Invisibility (making women invisible), ridiculing/belittling, withholding information, dual punishment and creating shame and guilt.
